Winter is a great time to learn how to identify birds by their calls! NatureInstruct–Dendroica is a great platform for learning bird songs and calls. Check this out!
This week I noticed this new guy through the window. I thought it looked like a northern shrike so it had all my attention! It flew over to a maple and landed 2 feet from where a mourning dove had been roosting for the past 45 minutes, but the mourning dove was nonplussed. I was confused. It looked like a northern shrike, but I knew that this hunter eats other birds, and I couldn’t understand why it didn’t make a meal out of the plump little sitting duck in my maple tree. Enter Ontario Birds (on Facebook), who confirmed for me that this is, indeed, a northern shrike. Apparently mourning doves are too big a quarry for these predatory songbirds, and evidently they know it! Yet another great learning experience in the yard!
